Someone
I admire in my field is Pierre Fauchard (1678 – March 22, 1761), he was a very
important physician credited as being the "father of
modern dentistry".
He was born in a modest home on Saint-Denis-de-Gastines, France in 1678. When he
was an adolescent he began to interest in the medicine area. In Angers he began
to practice the medicine on the Hospital of the University of Angers.
Fauchard performed greats developments of dental
instruments often adjusting tools of jewelers, watchmakers, even barbers tools.
He invents the toothpaste as a treatment against the caries, also he states
that the acids derived from sugar cause caries. He was the pioneer of the
dental prosthodontics and he develops a lot of methods to replace a missing
tooth. Pierre discovered that the position of a tooth can be corrected.
He invents a lot of other things related with
dentistry, but definitely the best improvement that he did is add the dentistry
as a important health area, he begans to use the concept of "Dental
Surgeon".
To finish he wrote "Le Chirurgien Dentiste",
a book where Fauchard edit all his knowledge about dentistry. Thanks to Pierre
Fauchard we can study dentistry as a division of the health area, and we can
treat a oral disease, not only extract teeth (as the old ways).
I didn't know him until now, he is a very important person to our field!
